Besides the above and Mindy's suggestions to study the background and culture of a particular book, you should also learn about the background of the inspired human author, the original readers written to and the purpose of the book.

Let me share an invaluable and yet free Bible study resource online by my Dallas Theological Seminary professor Dr. Constable. It is an online commentary on the whole Bible based on solid and biblical interpretation. Many pastors in the world including those in the 3rd world countries who cannot afford buying expensive reference books use them for their preaching and teaching. It is so in-depth that I appreciate it and use it for my ministry regularly. And yet it is in a language even lay Christians understand.

Just read Dr. Constable's Bible Study Notes for the introduction of the book and then read it when you encounter difficult verses you can't tolerate not finding the meaning of.

Here is a method you can use to help you get the big idea of each chapter and then the book. This is how Bible scholars got their big ideas about a particular book.

(1) Read a paragraph and find the big idea or subject. (2) read the following paragraphs, find the big idea of each one and see how they relate to one another and combine the big ideas that come under one bigger idea until you get the biggest idea for the whole chapter. (3) After you've read the whole book chapter by chapter, relate the big ideas in the chapters and find out the overarching big idea of the whole book. (4) Finally you can see the big idea for the OT, NT and the whole Bible.... See More

This is an effective way of reading any book and learning any subject -- Start with "Whole", then the "Parts" and then come back to the "Whole" again.

You are right, not only should we watch out what comes out of our body but also what we do with what comes out of it. Since many people don't watch out what comes out of it, we need to watch out when we go swimming especially when there are a lot of kids in the swimming pool!

The principles apply to the mental and spiritual realms as well.

Mau Kwan Tang is very thankful that he finally had time to have a thorough eye examination and purchased a new pair of glasses to replace the broken one. The broken one lasted for 7 years and his vision didn't get worse after all these years! Both eyes are well.
